Of course you will need different kind of items depending on the type of photography you operate, but there is photography gear every photographer should have.

Besides the right lens will often cost a lot more than your camera body, but there are many photography items which are affordable for a low price. As a photographer you will always spend money on certain things, for example if you want to photograph a special landscape scenery or well-known buildings, you will have travel expenses, or if you are using a flash regularly you will need to buy batteries for your flash again and again.

Yes, photography can be an expensive hobby and if you are a low-budget photographer, you will logically have less equipment, but also low-budget photographers depend on certain photography items. Almost every beginner spends his/her whole money on an expensive camera and totally forgets about necessary items such as tripods or bags. This is a huge mistake, because you will see how important certain accessories will get when you get more and more into photography.

So let’s start with our ” TOP 5 must-have dslr accessories ” List and let’s have a look which items almost every photographer should have:

1. Camera Bag

Camera Bags not only safely carry and store your camera & accessories, they will also protect your stuff from atmospheric influences. Depending on how many items you have, the size of the bag varies from small to huge, for example as a wildlife-photographer you will need a huge bag for long tele lenses. Try to find a camera bag which includes a built in tripod holder with quick release straps, this will help a lot if you are using a heavy tripod.

2. Tripod

Every photographer owns a tripod, no matter if you are a landscape photographer, a wildlife photographer, a fashion photographer, or a wedding photographer. It doesn’t matter they all have used a tripod at least once in their lifetime. Look for a steady and robust tripod and forget all those cheap plastic tripods, because they can break easily (especially those who happen to be telescopic with plastic clamps for adjusting height). Don’t forget to buy a tripod that can hold all your stuff. There are some really great tripods under $100.

3. Filter

Using a filter for you lens is just a MUST because they will not only protect your lens from scratches, dust and moisture, they will improve the image quality of the images you take.

There are various filters, such as the simple protection filter, which function is to only protect your lens of course. The most popular filters are ultra-violet reducing filters, the function of the UV filters is to block UV light and to remove the blue cast from the images taken in very sunny conditions. Protection and other filters are usually very cheap, but if you want to buy a high class UV Filter you will pay a lot, but quality has its price as we know.

4. Remote Shutter Release

A remote shutter release is another great accessory. It will prevent camera shake caused during the exposure, so if you work with slow shutter speeds a remote shutter release is recommended for sure. Remote shutter releases are very cheap, you will pay about $5 – $20, depending on which camera system you are using and there are also wireless remote shutter releases which will be more expensive than a standard remote shutter release.

5. Extra Battery

Imagine you are about to have the best photo session in your life and suddenly you realize your camera battery is empty, that’s one of the most terrible things that can happen to a photographer. So always be sure to bring along a fully charged extra battery for your camera body and of course for you flash if you use one. For some models, using the battery grip can actually benefit your work as it is easier to hold your camera, whereas battery life is significantly increased.
