Photographer Spotlight: Interview with Manuel Widl www.sleeklens.com

Welcome to another episode of Photographer Spotlight, this time I’d like to welcome Manuel Widl, an incredibly gifted photographer from Austria, who shows absolutely breathtaking landscape pictures. In this exclusive interview, you’ll find out what it is that makes him so good in his field.

1) Tell us about yourself, where are you from? How, when and why did you get into photography?

I grew up and live in Adnet, this is a small Village near Salzburg in Austria.
I got my first camera when I was 10 years old, but it was around 5 years ago when I was getting serious about my photography.
Nature was always playing a big part in my life and I wanted to capture those unique moments out there.

2) How much time do you spend on photography on average?

On average I would say 3-4 days a week, I try to bring my gear with me as often as possible.

3) Which gear do you mainly use / What is typically in your camera bag? (Camera body, Filters, Lenses, Tripod, Accessories, etc.)

Right now I am shooting with the Canon 6d, my most used lenses are the Canon 16-35, Canon 100mm macro, Sigma 24-105.
I don’t use Filters too much apart from a polarized one I mostly do exposure blending to control highlights and shadows.
I just bought a Sirui T-1004XL Tripod which I can highly recommend, it is very light but at the same time quiet tall.
I might switch to Sony or Nikon soon because of the dynamic range and low light performance of their new Cameras.

4) How important is post-processing for you? Can you tell us what kind of postprocessing you typically do? (Photoshop, Lightroom)

I think post processing is really important but at the same time, i try not to spend to much time behind the computer and keep a realistic look to my photographs.
This did change over the last couple of years in my processing style.
My basic processing I do in Lightroom and then I bring the file into Photoshop to do some further adjustments, especially using layer masks.

5) What’s the most challenging part of being a landscape photographer?

Decide which gear to buy, there is too much to choose from 😉

6) Do you have general advice and tips for other landscape photographers?

For beginners it is important to keep going and not be disappointed if the results do not turn out as good as expected, photography is a craft and it takes time to get good at it.

7) What are your future photography goals?

Try to keep open-minded and keep improving and also try to find some hidden gems to photograph in my surrounding areas.

8) Where can we find your images?
