Photographer Spotlight: Interview with Sven Müllerwww.sleeklens.com
Welcome to another episode of photographer spotlight! This time I would like to welcome Sven Müller. Sven is a landscape photographer from Germany, who shows aesthetically and technically perfect landscape images. In this exclusive interview, you’ll find out what it is that makes him so good in his field.
1) Tell us about yourself, where are you from? How, when and why did you get into photography?
Hi there, I’m Sven from the South of Germany. Wishing to capture sceneries of nature to preserve and not forget them brought me into photography. I do photography for about ten years now but it got more serious around 2010 with my first full-frame camera and the first trips to do nothing but photography.
2) How much time do you spend on photography on average?
Between two and four months per year.
3) What is the favorite photo you took and why?
Tough question. Well, there are just a few I’m really satisfied with – maybe nothing to change or I was waiting a long time to be able to capture them – and there are, of course, a few I really really like but never published, nor ever will. But, well let’s choose my photos “The Mountains Are Calling” and “The Wandering Soul”. Those two photographs remind me of my first time all alone in the Alps. That was when I really got into photography I guess. And that’s what they still stand for (me).
4) How do you prepare for an image?
Well, I also check the weather forecast before and most times have look onto the location via Google Earth but I’m not using any special prediction or guidance software and apps because I like to get surprised. And in my opinion, photography is a lot about improvising. See what happens on location and then try to make the best of it. Not everything should be scheduled in my opinion.
5) Do you have guiding principles that you follow when you’re taking pictures?
No, I don’t think so. Just check if it looks right and then captures it.
6) How important is post-processing for you? Can you tell us what kind of post-processing you typically do?
Post-processing is often very important. First of all, I think it is mostly necessary to achieve the real moment as good as possible in a photograph. And I like the possibilities we have to create something new and something which goes over reality sometimes. But personally, it shouldn’t go too far with Photoshop. I typically develop the RAW-files in Adobe Camera RAW (graduates, white balance, highlights & depths) and then blend them, if required, manually in Photoshop via layer masks, the channels, graduates, and brushes and do some corrections afterward like color balance, curves, dodge & burn or selective coloring.
7) What’s the most challenging part about being a photographer?
Never to give up and wait for moments which make all the waiting worth it. And not to give up photography when more and more people show up in the fields.
8) Do you have general advice and tips for other photographers?
Well, I guess most important is that on the one hand, you agree with your doing and on the other hand never to stop being critical about your results. And think about it if it’s really necessary to be so active and driven by the internet as many nowadays are. And think about if you discover something special, maybe a hidden place, if it’s really necessary to publish those photographs. Think about your influence, you may and will do harm.
9) What are your future photography goals?
Well, I really would like to limit my eyes to one country for a while, just trying to capture the absolute best in it. But also I really like to re-visit the alps, it has been four years now and I still miss them. As I said – that’s where I started landscape photography.
