Photography is an art. Like all types of art, there are many types of ways to learn. It really depends on your learning style and how you take in new information. This article discusses the best ways to learn photography. Feel free to only try the ones that appeal to you or try them all. Not every method will be enjoyable or inspiring to you, so choose the ones that you like. Finding enjoyment in photography is more important than finding the most efficient method to learn because enjoyment is what motivates a person to continue pursuing a hobby. With that in mind, let’s discuss the first point.

Invest in a Camera That You’ll Enjoy Shooting With

Camera prices nowadays are cheaper than they’ve ever been. This means that your ideal camera is likely quite affordable. If you can’t afford the top model that you have been eyeing for a long time, why not buy a model that was released earlier? Often, the set of features don’t differ by very much and you can save quite a bit of money by buying an older model. The reason that investing in a camera that you’ll enjoy using is that it will increase your motivation to continue shooting. To learn photography, you need to practice and practice. It is just like any other hobby, practice makes perfect. Hence, staying motivated is one of the biggest obstacles to learning photography. A fun to use camera is one that is filled with features like high fps burst, HD video recording capabilities, and manual shooting modes. These and other features allow the photographer to experiment and learn through trial and error. This is a great way to learn because it allows you to learn at your own pace.

Turn Photography Into a Habit

Photography doesn’t have to only happen when you have your SLR or main camera. Especially when you are learning photography, get into the habit of using whatever camera you have to take pictures. Even a cellular phone’s camera is better than not having a camera at all. It is still important to use photography principles no matter what kind of camera you use. Therefore, the more photos you take, the faster taking a great photo will become muscle memory for you. Of course, taking photos itself won’t improve your photography. As you take photos, remember the core principles of photography and try to apply them. Take your time composing the photo, adjust the camera angle as appropriate, and experiment with your surroundings.

Engage in Still Life Photography

Still, life photography is a great way to learn photography for beginners and amateur photographers alike. With still life photography, the photographer has time to compose and recompose the image as they like. The photographer has time to take the same shot with different settings to compare the differences. They have time to review the images at their leisure and experiment. Shooting portraits of people or action shots does not allow you to have the same freedom and flexibility. Beginner photographers shouldn’t always stick to still life photography though. It is a great place to start but will limit the amount that the photographer can learn in the long run. As you progress as a photographer, it is good to try different types of photography. Doing this will help you to learn on your feet and be adaptable in different situations.

Go on Photo Walks

Photo walks

are what they sound like – taking trips for the sole purpose of taking photos. Photo walks are great opportunities for learning photography because there is no pressure at all. Unlike being on a photo shoot, there is nobody waiting for the photographer and no expectations as to how the photos will turn out (except the photographer’s own expectations). This allows the photographer to experiment and try new things with their camera. It may be trying to copy a photo that they saw somewhere or it may be trying to come up with something completely new. Also, photo walks allow both beginner and professional photographers to have a relaxed environment where they can just enjoy photography. Professional photographers especially need this every once in a while to help them reset and continue to enjoy photography.

Happy learning!
