Have you ever experienced the feeling of seeing photographs of dishes and drinks and wanted to be part of the scene? No doubt a good food photograph can arouse the appetite of the most demanding viewer, but to achieve such an outcome, it is necessary to take into account many aspects.

In principle, lighting, as the basis for any photographic work. Food Photography is a particular case of Still Life Photography, so the studio atmosphere is going to be present in 95% of the situations that we find (except for some snapshot of an open air moment), but those are rare scenarios since even in those situations we tend to use studio conditions). By this we don’t mean that lighting should be artificial; in fact, natural lighting can set the difference between an amateur and a professional job, by the touch of realism that will show.

Following this process of preparation prior to the photo, the presentation of the dish or drink is essential – nobody would like to eat a dish that is seen streaking, with poor presentation or neglected. The same statement can be applied to a photograph: imagine that, by taking a photograph, we are trying to promote a business such as a restaurant or a coffee shop – the best letter of introduction that can be offered by our business is to have photographs taken by a professional, showing the our repertoire of products offered to our customers. Dishes and drinks with a suitable appearance will achieve 50% of our task; therefore. It is essential to pay attention to the composition of the picture, the colors and shapes, to sell the product in the best possible way.

And passing through the obvious steps of setting up our camera and gathering inspiration, we could say the work is complete… but the reality is that, in order to obtain a quality food photograph  it requires work characterized to be hard and fast – foods should be captured as soon as they are prepared, taking advantage of the steam, which gives us that feeling of ‘just-cooked’, but it is also a reality that many foods decompose rapidly or are prone to melt (mainly those as ice creams, fine pastries, or excessively decorated preparations), by which slowing down too much for camera settings can be counterproductive.

Here comes the dilemma: the photographic quality.
