With so many distractions around such as social media and news outlets, it sometimes becomes difficult to confuse on a project at hand. In addition to those factors, there are also some things around you that you might not be consciously aware of that is indeed affecting or hindering your workflow. Have a productive workspace is imperative when it comes to staying focus and actually enjoying what you’re doing without the constant distractions. In this article, I will be sharing you some tips of my own as to how you can create a productive workspace as a photographer or videographer. These tips can also be useful if you’re just generally looking to improve your workspace and make it a lot more comfortable and pleasing to work in.

1. Lighting

This may sound a bit odd but lighting plays a huge role in your productivity. Many of us are different and this may vary depending on the type of person you are. For example, I feel more productive in a room or at a desk with a lot of natural light or great lighting. Working in low light or dark area can often encourage fatigue, strain your eyes or lead on a headache. All of these things can hinder or stop your workflow.

If you are working from home, I would advise moving your desk as close to a window as possible to add more natural light to your work area. If you are in a situation where windows are not accessible to you then I would encourage taking a look at some lamps or lights that can provide sufficient lighting depending on how dark the area is.

2. Chair & Table

Investing into these two things might come with a price tag but I can promise you that it will be worth the money. Posture has a lot to do with your productivity as well as where you’re sitting. If you notice, whenever you’re doing work in bed, you’re not always the most productive person in the world. You’re probably very comfortable but for the most part, you are bound to become lazy and give in to the temptation of going to sleep.

There are chair and tables that can easily be found on Amazon that encourages good posture as well as taking into account the safety of your eyes. As photographer and videographers, we spend a majority if not all our time in front of a screen. It can be anything from a laptop, a monitor or even an Ipad. The distance of our eyes from these screens are in important and will be helpful in the long run if you follow the correct instructions.

Eyes should be anywhere between 24-36 inches from your screen at all times. Failure to practice this may result in frequent migraines or even having to get glasses. Your Chair should allow your feet to rest flat, comfortably on the floor without having to stretch. This encourages great posture and helps to avoid any back problems in the near future.

3. Clutter

I know for a fact some of us are guilty of overcrowding our desk or workspace with things that only served a purpose for a while but then served no purpose at all. I know for a fact I was guilty of this until I saw the benefits of minimalism. The art of decluttering and being a minimalist can be subjective to your personality and the things that you need. However, I can assure you that minimalism often encourages productivity.

By decluttering your desk or workspace, you are often subconsciously decluttering your mind and becoming more organized in your actions. You will notice how easier it becomes to edit or work on a batch of photos or videos as opposed to when you have a cluttered desk obstructing your hand movements and in theory, obstructing your thought process. During post-production, we need to pay attention to detail in order to produce the best quality work possible. Remove anything that is not of importance or relevance as to what it is you’re doing in your day to day projects and observe as your productivity increases.

4. Get A Curved Monitor

This is another tip that might dip into your pockets a little bit but it always for the greater good. If you don’t already have one, I would advise you look into getting one. So far in 2018, there has been an increase in the production and sales of curved screens and even curved televisions. For photographers and videographers, a curved screen can create a lot more digital space to have multiple windows opened at once. This improvement in digital space will make the workflow a lot easier and enjoyable. In addition to having more digital space, a curved screen helps to make you feel a lot more immersed in your work. This helps you to focus on the task at hand a lot easier.

I hope these tips have been a great help to you even if you’re not a photographer or videographer. Having a productive workspace at home or even at your office is important to your workflow and can yield amazing results. Until next time, thank you for stopping by!
